Prepaid service plans – worth it or just a way to lock you in?

I just bought a used 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the dealership tried really hard to sell me a prepaid maintenance package but I said no because I wanted to think about it first. Now I’m wondering if I made the right call because I do plan on keeping the car for at least three or four years and I know regular oil changes and inspections add up. A colleague told me that some independent garages offer their own packages that are cheaper than the dealer and more flexible about what’s included. I’ve been looking at different mussafah service contract plans since I live on that side of the city and the labor rates there are usually lower than places closer to the corniche. Has anyone here signed up for a prepaid plan from an independent shop and actually saved money compared to paying per visit? Or do they end up nickel and diming you for things that aren’t covered? Just trying to figure out if it’s peace of mind or a gimmick.
